If the infection is not cured, gingiva moves away from the tooth and it creates pockets where bacteria proliferate, and the bone tissue starts to decay.

Periodontology is the branch of dentistry that deals with the health of the periodontium (the supporting tissues of the tooth such as: bone, alveolodentary ligament, gum, etc.). The inflammation of one or more supporting tissues of the tooth is called periodontitis, which in the past was also referred to as pyorrhea.

What is periodontitis? It is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by the action of numerous bacterial species organized in the form of biofilms that contribute to the formation of bacterial plaque and tartar. The persistence of the inflammation leads to a progressive loss of the bone supporting the tooth, leading to its premature extraction. Currently one out of three Italians suffers from periodontitis.

General opinion states that this disease, also called pyorrhoea, is not curable and it is hereditary.

Actually, gingival and underlying bone disorders can be prevented and monitored.
